An analog clock is placed among sleek modern controls of the Genesis G90, offering a stylish alternative to the digital timepieces commonly found in vehicles. It also serves as a reminder of the model’s competitiveness when it comes to respecting its drivers’ time.
Michael Desmond, a Genesis Experience Manager at M.J. Sullivan Genesis in New London, says one of the dealership’s cornerstones is respect for its customers and their schedules. He says most luxury vehicle buyers are extremely busy and might find it difficult to stop by a dealership to peruse the available models.
In response, Genesis offers a sales valet service for its models. Instead of a customer visiting the dealership, the dealership can come to the customer at the time and place of their convenience. One customer in Hartford was only available on Sunday, so that was when Desmond delivered it.
“We will bring the car to you for a demonstration,” he says. “We will even bring it to you on the day you buy it.”
“The consumer’s most important thing is time. So what can we do to respect their time?” asks Bill Sullivan, owner of M.J. Sullivan Genesis. “That’s what the Genesis Experience is all about.”
Genesis also offers a service valet for its customers. Drivers can schedule a maintenance appointment on their smartphone, and the dealership will pick up the vehicle and provide them with a Genesis loaner.
There is a three-year, 36,000 mile warranty for complimentary services including maintenance, Sirius XM radio data, and Genesis Connected Services such as remote start with climate control and enhanced roadside assistance. Genesis models also have a five-year, 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.
“It’s probably the nicest car I’ve driven in a long time,” says Sullivan. “And you’re really just putting gas in the car for the first three years.”
The Genesis, introduced in September 2016, is a new luxury franchise from Hyundai. M.J. Sullivan Genesis is the only Genesis dealership in eastern Connecticut and Long Island to offer both the G80 and G90 Genesis sedans.
In order to become a franchise for the brand, Sullivan and several of his employees had to attend a special training on selling and servicing the vehicles. Desmond and James Kirby Sr. were promoted to the position of Genesis Experience Manager to oversee the brand’s sales.
“They’re specialists on the vehicle,” says Sullivan. “They’re going to be able to go through the car top to bottom and tell you everything about it.”
“That’s one of our hallmarks at M.J. Sullivan: setting the bar high and understanding the customer’s needs and wants,” says Kirby.
Both the G80 and G90 models have earned the Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with several safety features coming standard. These include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, blind spot monitoring, and radar-guided smart cruise control.
All Genesis models sold at M.J. Sullivan have all-wheel drive, making them ideal for wintry commutes. In addition to undercarriage and wheel well protection, the vehicles come with a seven-year anti-perforation warranty against corrosion. M.J. Sullivan also offers a Smart Shield coating to further protect the exterior paint and interior upholstery against environmental factors as well as spills and stains.
The G80 model comes in three trim levels: Tech, Premium, and Ultimate. All models include leather seats, xenon headlights, an 8-inch touchscreen navigation and rearview camera display, and side mirrors with puddle lights that display the Genesis logo when keyless entry is activated.
The Premium trim level features a power panoramic moon roof, Lexicon surround sound stereo, heated and ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Ultimate trim level comes with premium leather and contrast piping on the seats, a heads-up display to show driving metrics on the windshield, a 9-inch display screen, and heated rear seats. Other options include powered sun shades and front and rear parking sensors.
The G80 has a 3.8-liter, 380 horsepower V6 engine. Its price starts at $44,900.
With the G90, all features come standard and a buyer need only choose the type of engine they want. The model offers either a 3.3-liter V6 twin turbo with 365 horsepower or a 5.0-liter V8 with 420 horsepower.
The G90 offers an exceptionally quiet ride, with chambered wheels and sound-deadening glass cutting down on road noise. Hydraulic latches allow doors to softly close, even if you haven’t quite shut them all the way. The seats are modeled after those in the airline industry, giving an experience similar to riding on a private plane.
Cameras in the front, rear, and side mirrors provide a 360-degree view to assist with parking and curb approaches. Other features include a Lexicon 17-speaker surround sound system, dynamic bending headlights that can pivot up to 30 degrees, heated and ventilated seats, and a rear control panel to allow passengers to control the seats, ambient temperature, and stereo.
Different driving modes include Comfort, Economy, or Sport. However, there is also an Individual mode allowing you to personalize your settings.
“You can have a Sport-tuned suspension and a Comfort-tuned steering wheel,” says Desmond. “You can really get into it.”
The 3.3-liter model has a retail price of $71,550, while the 5.0-liter model sells for $73,150.
The Genesis is already proving competitive in the luxury market. Kirby says the G80 costs $15,000 to $20,000 less than comparative models, while the G90 competes with models that sell for $80,000 or more. Unlike many luxury models, the Genesis is designed to run with regular grade fuel rather than premium.
“This is something that sets the benchmark very high, especially with the luxury brand,” says Kirby.
Desmond says many customers have been trading in European brands to purchase a Genesis.
“They’re fed up with the bloated service fees,” he says. “With the Genesis brand, we’re able to offer those same benefits for a much more competitive price.”
The Genesis lineup will expand in the coming years as different types of vehicles are added. These will include the G70 sedan; the G80 Sport, a midsize sports car; and large and midsize SUV models.
“We’re excited as Genesis Experience Managers to be on the forefront of something new,” says Kirby.
